Bluetooth
Bluetooth – a new standard of wireless communication.Personal digital assistants (PDAs), organizers, mobiles and printers are now produced with an integrated Bluetooth chip or can easily be upgraded.
The identification of the individual Bluetooth devices is done by a worldwide unambiguous 48 Bit address. This makes it possible to have 281 trillion addresses (10 to the power of 12). Bluetooth works in a frequency range between 2,402 GHz and 2,480 GHz, the so called ISM-band (industrial, scientific, medical) that is worldwide available free of charge and unlicensed.
Microwaves, diathermy applications, TV supervision, radio control systems and WLAN (using the IEEE 802.11b standard) are sharing the ISM-band with Bluetooth. If you use WLAN and Bluetooth disturbances at the expense of Bluetooth cannot be excluded. This would result in a lower reference data transfer rate.
According to Bluetooth specification there are 3 performance classes at the moment. These classes vary in transmission power (range) and consequently in energy consumption.
The maximum range for the short distance radio data transmission Bluetooth is approx. 10 meters when using class II modules. For industrial products SOREX Wireless mostly uses class I modules which have a range of up to 300 meters when intervisibility is provided.
When raising the issue of security, it has to stated that Bluetooth is very fail-proof and tap-proof compared to Wireless LAN, because it uses “frequency hopping”. Bluetooth uses 79 frequencies on the frequency band that reaches from 2.402 MHz to 2.480 MHz and changes the frequency up to 1.600 times per second.
