Wireless LAN

tl_files/products/WirelessTechn/logo_wlan.gifWhen talking about Wireless LAN (Wireless Local Area Network, WLAN ) a flexible communication system is meant, that is normally used to replace a wired LAN or to complement a wired LAN by providing additional functionality. A conventional, wired LAN (Local Area Network) transmits data by wire from on network component to another one. Wireless LAN however therefore uses radio waves. WLAN links two or more computers or devices using spread-spectrum or OFDM modulation technology based to enable communication between devices in a limited area. This gives users the mobility to move around within a broad coverage area and still be connected to the network. For the home user, wireless has become popular due to ease of installation, and location freedom with the gaining popularity of laptops.

The popularity of wireless LANs is a testament primarily to their convenience, cost efficiency, and ease of integration with other networks and network components. The majority of computers sold to consumers today come pre-equipped with all necessary wireless LAN technology.
